Barred Rock

This is a barred rock.  Barred rock is a color variety of the Plymouth rock breed of domestic chicken.  The breed was developed in the United States in the 1800’s, and it is one of the most common breeds of chicken in the United States.  Barred rock chickens are a cold-hardy bird, which means that it can survive cold winters.  It is also a dual-purpose bird, which means that it is useful for the eggs that it lays and the meat that it produces. Usually they are not aggressive, so they are good farm birds.
